ARRINA
Volume is intriguing. Occasionally I find myself filling rooms with small imaginary cubes to get an idea of how much volume is in a space. In this instance, the foreground stool, and all the little cubes in the woodwork, is the key to the room, and then the room itself can be regarded as but one of myriads of tiny cubes filling the immensity of space … represented here by a view through the window. (What distinguishes microcosm from macrocosm?) The perspective lines of objects in the room flow outwards through the window and beyond, whilst light flows inwards, illuminating the room … a two-way movement.
Also of interest are the differing tactile qualities between wood, stone, glass, fabric and paper. I enjoy the way that the mood of this painting changes depending on how it is lit.
